💛 Animal WelfareShe found a sick swan – and carried it for miles and across New York to the animal hospital
Ariel just wanted to go birdwatching. Then she spotted a motionless swan – and took on an incredible rescue: on foot for over a mile, by bike, and right through the New York subway.
A swan that wouldn't move
Ariel Cordova-Rojas thought she'd spend an ordinary day birdwatching when she headed to a wildlife refuge in Queens near New York City. But shortly after arriving, she spotted a bird in urgent need of help: a swan that struck her as odd.

«It wasn't moving. I walked up to it, and it just stayed still,» she told the Daily News. «Swans are usually very aggressive and defend their territory – so I knew right away something was wrong.»
Ariel had worked at a bird rescue for five years, caring for wild birds. She knew exactly what to look for in an injured animal. And yet she now faced a puzzle: how on earth was she going to get this big, sick swan to safety?
