No one wanted little Gracie, born without her front legs. Until a twelve-year-old boy reached for his favourite building bricks and gave her exactly what she needed to be happy: the freedom to move.
Born without front legs – and simply left behind
Some animals get such a hard start in life that it's hard to believe how much spirit they carry inside. Gracie is one of them. The little dog was born without both of her front legs – a congenital condition her first owners simply couldn't cope with. Instead of helping her, they abandoned the puppy and left her to her fate.
When Gracie was finally found, her condition was heartbreaking. She was severely malnourished, had lost much of her fur around her eyes, paws and tail, and seemed utterly drained. Worms plagued her tiny body too – a clear sign of how long no one had cared for her. The only thing keeping her going was the faint hope of a second chance.
She found that chance with the Turney family, who run the animal rescue «Mostly Mutts» in Kennesaw, Georgia. To them, Gracie was beautiful – despite, or precisely because of, her special body. The family already had a dog that wasn't built quite «normally», so they knew exactly what mattered. A two-legged puppy wasn't a challenge to them, but a welcome new family member.
To give Gracie as unrestricted a life as possible, everyday life had to be adapted. Some furniture was rebuilt so the little one could go everywhere. But one problem remained: how could a dog without front legs move around freely and independently?
