A garage in flames – and a mother who wouldn't give up
It was March 1996 in Brooklyn, New York. Firefighters responded to a burning, abandoned garage – one of many calls. But what firefighter _David Giannelli_ witnessed there, he had never seen in his entire career.

A stray cat, later named Scarlett, kept running back into the burning building. Not once, not twice – five times. Each time she carried out one of her kittens, placed it in the grass, and returned to the flames.
Each time she brought a kitten to safety, she nudged it with her nose to feel if it was still alive. She could no longer see – her eyes had already swollen shut from the heat.
