Some images simply won't let you go. One such photo was taken at a shelter in New Mexico – and many called it the saddest picture they had ever seen.
It was taken by a volunteer from the High Plains Humane Society (HPHS) at the animal shelter in Portales, New Mexico. It shows a dog clinging to the red bars of her kennel with her front paws, looking straight into the camera with big eyes. A single tear appears to run down her muzzle.
She sat there, utterly downcast by her situation, while around her other dogs found homes one by one – only she was left behind. No one seemed to want her. Worried that time might be running out for her, the shelter decided to share her photo – as a kind of last resort.
